Education Programs

PATH provides a variety of educational programs for both keiki and adults. We teach pedestrian safety classes, bike safety classes and safe driving classes for commercial vehicle drivers. The goal of these classes is to encourage people to take up healthier, active lifestyles by walking, hiking and bicycling more and to reduce the number of accidents. Below is more information about all of our class offerings.

Bicycle Safety Skills

14 years to Adult

Hands-on practical component of the League of American Bicyclists Bicycle Safety Skills course designed to:

  • Give you the confidence to ride safety in traffic
  • Teach how to conduct bicycle safety checks and basic bike maintenance
  • Provide knowledge and practice of crash avoidance skills

This class uses a curriculum developed by the League of American Bicyclists and taught by trained professionals from PATH Peoples Advocacy for Trails Hawaii.

Youth Ped Ed

1st – 3rd Grade

Ped Ed is a pedestrian safety program for 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students offered by PATH to all Big Island schools and youth clubs.

Program Highlights

  • 45-minute program conducted at school.
  • Lessons for 1st, 2nd & 3rd grade students.
  • Interactive learning with rhyme, art & role play.
  • Trained instructors visit the classroom.
  • Lessons include: bus danger zones, crossing the street, meaning of traffic signs & more.
  • Provided free of charge thanks to grant funding.

Youth Bike Ed

4th Grade

Bike Ed is a bicycle safety skills and handling program offered by PATH to all Big Island schools and youth clubs.

Program Highlight

  • A 3-day program conducted on school campus (45-minutes per class).
  • Target is 4th graders.
  • Trained instructors who can teach beginners & non-riders as well.
  • Bikes and helmets provided by PATH for all students.
  • Provided free of charge thanks to grant funding.
